First Bra

A, B, C, D, E, F. 32, 34, 36. As a young girl, you probably have no idea what these kinds of ABC’s and numbers mean. These strange figures become part of your womanhood. They symbolize a young girl’s coming of age, one of the signs that she has become a young woman. They are what you need to know when you get your first bra.

Getting your first bra can be a scary, strange, awkward feeling at first; still it’s fun and exciting because you’re finally growing up. It’s nothing to be ashamed of as every girl goes through this phase.

How was it like, for other girls, to get their first bras? How was it like for your mom or your elder sister to get her first bra? Most first bra stories start out the same. Back in 4th or 5th grade, their moms took them to the department store to get their first bra. It’s like an induction, from mother to daughter, into womanhood. You can learn a lot from other girls’ “my first bra stories”, and how to deal with the teases, the itches and being a late or early bloomer.

Girls grow differently from one another. Such is the story of an early bloomer who got her first bra at six years old. They weren’t very large, but other kids teased her, because at six years old, nobody really understood much about breasts. Some girls get their first bra as late as 13 years old. But you need not worry. You’ll grow up for sure.

You can look through a first bra gallery on the Internet to get an idea of what style you want to get before you head out to a department store. From the basic white or cream bras to the lacy pink pieces, be sure to choose what is most comfortable.

“My First Bra”, a film by Margaret Babbott and Julie Akeret, is a charming film about the female rite of passage buying the first bra. Women reveal stories about the influence of peers, the anxiety over puberty, and the importance of the mother-daughter bond.

However, it’s not only the girls who get their first bra. Odd as it is, there are boys who grow differently from the other boys. They dream of having their first bra! But it’s all part of life and growing up when a little boy wants his first bra.

Now you know your ABC’s, you can leave girlhood and enter womanhood. It’s a whole new phase, with a whole new wardrobe. There’s nothing to be ashamed of, as it is all part of life. Before you know it, you'll be bra shopping, too.
